FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a fondo?
A fondo (or gran fondo) is a type of competitive long-distance cycling event with a mass start and chip timing. Fondos are traditionally at least 75 miles, but we are capping ours at 60, with 40- and 20-mile options in addition.
Is this a race?
Ride 2 Somerset is a USAC-sanctioned, timed event and we will be publishing the results. Also, the 60-mile distance will be a proper race with prizes (places 1–3, male/female). The 20- and 40-mile distances will be timed, but no prizes will be awarded.
When will the routes/courses be published?
They are live on our Routes page!
What is the deadline to register?
According to our Registration page, there are three registration deadlines with corresponding entry fees:
-
Early Registration (Jan 1 – Feb 28)
-
Standard Registration (Mar 1 – Apr 11)
-
Late Registration (Apr 12–18)
Will there be rest/SAG stops?
The 60- and 40-mile courses will have three rest stops—one staffed and two unstaffed—with port-o-potties and water. The 20-mile course will have one oasis with port-o-potties and water.
Will there be emergency SAG service available?
Yes, we will have vehicles equipped with bike racks to give you a lift back to the start should you encounter trouble you're unable to resolve along the course. Emergency SAG is available to riders at this number: 323-743-3896 (also printed on the reverse side of your number plate).
What is the parking situation like?
Parking will be clearly marked once you enter the venue with volunteers from our beneficiary, Cancer Action, helping direct riders.
Will the courses be marked with signage?
No, courses will not be marked, so please be sure to download your route or bring a cue sheet for directions.
Will there be packets to pick up in advance?
We will not be handing out packets or t-shirts, just a commemorative patch on ride day. Easy peasy!
Will there be post-ride food and festivities?
There will be a taco truck, beverages, and complimentary massages available at the winery after the ride.
Will the course be muddy if it rains?
As of right now, the course is in excellent shape, and we don't have any particular areas of concern where we might experience flooding or deep mud. We will be doing a final inspection of the course on Friday and will communicate any possible route changes that evening. Assume that no news is good news. We will also have cars out again on Saturday morning as well, since there's a chance for overnight rain. Any last minute changes will be communicated to riders as part of the pre-ride instructions.
Why is Ride 2 hosting this event?
In short, to beat cancer on a bike. Most of us have witnessed first-hand how cancer affects patients and their families. It's our aim to support great local organizations, like Cancer Action, who are doing important work to fight this disease and its impacts on individuals and families.
Can I make an additional donation to support the cause?
Yes! We have a Donation page where you may make an additional monetary donation, which will go directly to our beneficiary, Cancer Action.
How do I get in touch if I have additional questions?
